International Forum "The Significance of the Caucasus Battle in the Great Victory"

The international forum "The Significance of the Caucasus Battle in the Great Victory" gathered in Stavropol dozens of historians, public figures from different regions of Russia and a number of foreign countries. Researchers open unknown pages of one of the bloodiest and longest battles of the Great Patriotic War. The organizers of the forum - the government of the Stavropol Territory, the Russian Military Historical Society and Stavropol State Museum-Reserve gathered historians, social activists, deputies, students of educational institutions of the region in the regional center.

The main program of the forum opened with a plenary session. Its audience consisted of representatives of federal and regional authorities, historians, teachers, representatives of public organizations, delegates from the Republic of Azerbaijan. Representatives of the Czech Republic, Serbia, the United States and Mongolia also sent their greetings.

Chairman of the Duma of the Stavropol Territory Nikolai Timofeevich Velikdan addressed the forum participants. He noted that in 1943, during the Battle for the Caucasus, it was possible to turn the tide of the Great Patriotic War, after which the further victorious offensive of the Red Army began.

“Two years ago, a new date appeared in the calendar of days of military glory of Russia - October 9th. This day was established at the initiative of the deputies of the Stavropol Duma of the sixth convocation in 2020. I consider the adoption of this law a significant achievement of the regional legislators, and I thank everyone who took part in the development of this bill,” said N.T. Velikdan.

During the plenary session, a story was heard about how Stavropol search engines found the remains of a soldier from Azerbaijan who died in the battle for the Caucasus during the fighting in the region. His name was established, relatives were found. They also became participants in the forum and expressed their gratitude for the restored memory of their heroic ancestor.

Deputy of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the Russian Community of Azerbaijan Mikhail Zabelin asked representatives of the Regional Branch of the Russian Military Historical Society in the region for help in searching for relatives of the soldiers buried in the territory of the Republic.

During the discussion, Doctor of Historical Sciences Nikolai Sudavtsov suggested developing a joint project to study the relationship between Stavropol and Azerbaijan during the battle for the Caucasus. In addition, he noted that for a deep study of the history of that period, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive program and create a research center in the region.

Within the framework of the forum, five breakout sessions were organized: “The influence of the battle for the Caucasus on the course of the Second World War”, “The battle for the Caucasus: countering attempts to falsify history”; "The occupation regime and the struggle against it by the population of the North Caucasus"; "Heroic deeds of the population of the North Caucasus during the battle for the Caucasus" and "The Commonwealth of the peoples of the Caucasus in the fight against fascism."

The rich three-day program of the forum also included a round table "The Battle for the Caucasus: history, lessons, challenges of our time."

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Philosophy and History of Stavropol State Agrarian University Evgeny Vasilyevich Tufanov headed the work of the section "Commonwealth of the peoples of the Caucasus in the fight against fascism." Together with colleagues: Askerbiy Dagirovich Koychuev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Karachay-Cherkess State University named after U.D. Aliev” (Cherkessk, Russia) and Salikhat Ibragimovna Musaeva, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of Dagestan State University (Makhachkala, Russia) listened to the reports of the speakers. Evgeny Vasilyevich, within the framework of the forum, revealed in his speech an important topic, namely the functioning of the management system during the Great Patriotic War (on the materials of the North Caucasus). All reports aroused keen interest and real discussion.

Day of military glory of Russia: October 9 - The day of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet troops in the Battle for the Caucasus (1943) was established by the deputies of the State Duma on July 15, 2020.

The battle for the Caucasus is one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War, which lasted 442 days (from July 25, 1942 to October 9, 1943) and played an important role in creating and completing a radical change in the course of the Great Patriotic War. After the 900-day defense of Leningrad, the Battle for the Caucasus became the second longest battle of the Great Patriotic War.
